Almost 40 years ago, while my wife and I were dating, we were always interested in tropical fish, and we'd spend much of our weekends at the local department store "hanging out" in the aquarium department checking out the fish and aquarium supplies. One day, the department manager, recognizing us, asked when we were finally going to buy an aquarium setup. When we told him we couldn't afford it, he picked a 10 gallon aquarium off the shelf, marked it as a "leaker" and sold it to us for $5. Good move! We spent the next few weeks in his department emptying our pockets for fish, filters, pumps, gravel, food, and other aquarium supplies. That was just the beginning.

Over the years, as we added aquariums, aquarium supplies and fish to our collection, my wife and I often talked about owning our own aquarium store. As often happens, careers and family took precedence, so we never took the plunge. But we never lost our enthusiasm for aquariums and tropical fish. We currently keep a freshwater and saltwater aquarium in our home and two ponds outside, not to mention boxes of new and old aquarium supplies. One of the biggest challenges we have faced is the lack of a complete line of pumps, filters, parts and aquarium supplies in the local pet stores. It's Murphy's Law - whatever you absolutely, positively need, your local store won't have it.
